The coast is UK’s top day out!
As anyone who has walked with Coast Along in previous years will tell you, getting out along our coastlines is a great way to spend the day. And to prove the point, new research carried out by YouGov reveals that going to the coast is the nation’s most popular day out.
The research shows that a majority (78%) of UK adults say visiting the coast or seaside makes it into their top three favourite days out. People in the West Midlands are the UK’s biggest coast lovers, with 87% saying it’s one of their top three ways to spend a day out.
The survey, commissioned by the charity, also revealed that on a day out at the coast:
• People in the UK are likely to be found hitting the coastal trails – 77% enjoy going for a walk
• The Welsh are the most likely to take the plunge – and brave the cold – for a seaside dip, with 44% saying they enjoy a swim in the sea!
• People in the North East and Wales are some of the nation’s most enthusiastic sandcastle builders with 34% of people in Wales and more than 1 in 4 (28%) in the North East saying it’s something they like to do at the seaside.
As walking is the nation’s most popular coastal activity, we are hoping people will be inspired to combine their favourite day out with doing something for charity, by striding out on the UK’s beautiful coastal paths and joining in with Coast Along for WaterAid 2012. You can even bring your bucket and spade!
